Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell

Gaskell, Mrs. Elizabeth Cleghorn. 1810–1865. Novelist and biographer. Author of Ruth, Sylvia's Lovers, Wives and Daughters, Mary Barton, etc. Her books are earnest and well written; Cranford, in fact, is almost a classic work, and her Life of Charlotte Brontë is a much-admired biography. See Lit.
